Alonso crushed 35 home runs in the first round, the highest single-round total of the night, and 23 homers in the final round to beat Mancini. He previously won the 2019 Home Run Derby at Progressive Field in Cleveland as a rookie. From 1985 through 1990, the Home Run Derby was structured as a two-inning event with each participant getting five outs per inning. Since 1991, eight to ten players, were chosen to participate in a three round contest to determine the Home Run Derby Champion. Each player received ten outs per round as they attempted to hit as many home runs as they could. He didn't even need to hit a single homer in the second round to advance, but added six more for 23 total before the scoreboard reset.
In 2012, Cano followed that performance by failing to hit a single home run. Garrett Anderson went on to win the title that year, then hit a home run in the All-Star game, becoming the third player to pull off that feat, joining Cal Ripken Jr. and Frank Thomas . In 1991, the number of outs was expanded to 10, but the team competition format remained. However, a tiebreaker was put in place to determine an individual champion, and it was first used in 1993 when Juan Gonzalez defeated Ken Griffey Jr. in a playoff. Griffey Jr. won the title the following season, the first of his three Home Run Derby championships . The American League won the final team championship that year, finishing with five titles to the NL's four.

That may not have been able to top Yoenis Cespedes' 32 home runs, but it would have been better than what New York received. David Wright hit 22 home runs during the 2006 event, falling just shy of Ryan Howard's mark of 23 for the victory. Since then, Wright has been absent from the Home Run Derby, opting out of returns to the event.
The colossal distance he got on the majority of them was outstanding. The 2013 Home Run Derby didn't fail to offer fans plenty of excitement on Monday night as Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes became the newest home run champion. While the 2011 Home Run Derby crown may solidify his status as a threat in any of these events, the past two years have been disturbingly poor for Cano. That same year, MLB again tweaked the format, setting up head-to-head matchups in the second round.
