Golden Soul took second place while Revolutionary finished third.

Prior to the 2000s, ties were broken by the number of home runs a player had hit in the regular season to that point. The next year, Home Run Derby headed to Boston for the first time, and Mark McGwire put on a show, peppering 13 home runs in the first round, with most sailing over Fenway Park's famed Green Monster. In 2008, Josh Hamilton made Home Run Derby history at Yankee Stadium, hitting a record 28 home runs, including 13 consecutive at one point. With totals reset for the final, Hamilton lost out to Minnesota's Justin Morneau. Hamilton's 35 total home runs hit during the event are still the second-most in Home Run Derby history. In 2004, Miguel Tejada set a single-round record when he hit 15 home runs in the second round, en route to his eventual title.

In 2012, Cano followed that performance by failing to hit a single home run. Garrett Anderson went on to win the title that year, then hit a home run in the All-Star game, becoming the third player to pull off that feat, joining Cal Ripken Jr. and Frank Thomas . In 1991, the number of outs was expanded to 10, but the team competition format remained. However, a tiebreaker was put in place to determine an individual champion, and it was first used in 1993 when Juan Gonzalez defeated Ken Griffey Jr. in a playoff. Griffey Jr. won the title the following season, the first of his three Home Run Derby championships . The American League won the final team championship that year, finishing with five titles to the NL's four.

Ohtani failed to go deep on his first swing and that was it, he was eliminated. For only the third time in history, we have repeat Home Run Derby champion. Monday night, New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso bested Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini in the finals of the 2021 Home Run Derby at Coors Field in Denver. Harper split hits rounds pretty evenly, eight in the first and eight in the second to advance to the final with 16. Here's a look at one from the first round, mostly so you can check out his hair. Detroit's Prince Fielder, the defending champion of the event, made his exit after the first round. For every stunning home run that traveled into the depths of Citi Field, we saw just as many mis-hit pitches.

Alonso crushed 35 home runs in the first round, the highest single-round total of the night, and 23 homers in the final round to beat Mancini. He previously won the 2019 Home Run Derby at Progressive Field in Cleveland as a rookie. From 1985 through 1990, the Home Run Derby was structured as a two-inning event with each participant getting five outs per inning. Since 1991, eight to ten players, were chosen to participate in a three round contest to determine the Home Run Derby Champion. Each player received ten outs per round as they attempted to hit as many home runs as they could. As a survivor of stage 3 colon cancer, Mancini was already a rich source of inspiration before his performance in the derby on Monday night. But then he went out and made the finals while also pushing Alonso close to the limit. Cespedes hit 23 homers in the first two rounds, while Harper finished with 16. After the draw of the field, Orb, the Florida Derby winner, was the 7-2 favorite. Trainer Todd Pletcher had five different horses in the race, including the winners of the Arkansas Derby , Louisiana Derby and Wood Memorial .

Not only was Cano unable to strike home runs at the level expected of him, but the ones he did hit were far from impressive. While the 2011 Home Run Derby crown may solidify his status as a threat in any of these events, the past two years have been disturbingly poor for Cano. The 2013 Home Run Derby was one to remember, as Yoenis Cespedes and Bryce Harper battled until the bitter end for the championship gold.

Joey Gallo, the No. 2 seed, was ousted by hometown Rockie Trevor Story in the first round. The National League split its players between two experienced veterans and two players who have not been in the league very long. The Oakland Athletics outfielder became the fourth straight Home Run Derby champion from the American League.

He may not be the most revered power hitter, but with Wright in front of his home crowd, fans expected a repeat of 2006. That may not have been able to top Yoenis Cespedes' 32 home runs, but it would have been better than what New York received. David Wright hit 22 home runs during the 2006 event, falling just shy of Ryan Howard's mark of 23 for the victory. Since then, Wright has been absent from the Home Run Derby, opting out of returns to the event.

For the first time, the colts making the field in the Kentucky Derby qualified under a new points system. In years past, colts qualified based on graded stakes earnings. That record didn't last long, as the following season, Bobby Abreu hit 24 first-round home runs at Comerica Park in Detroit. Abreu finished the event with 41 total home runs, an event record that still stands. Major League Baseball added Home Run Derby to the schedule of All-Star events in 1985 at the Metrodome. The event was set up as a competition between the two leagues, with players getting five outs per inning in a two-inning event. The format of the event allowed for ties among individual players for the championship. In 1988, the Home Run Derby was rained out, the only time since the event was created that it did not take place.

Cespedes, who hit 23 homers in the first two rounds, stepped up to the plate after Harper. The outfielder smashed a line-drive homer on his first swing of the final round, and blasted his second homer of the round 411 feet on his third swing. The right-hander continued his power display, hitting his ninth homer with five outs to go. In 1998, Griffey won his second championship when he tied Jim Thome, 3-3 in the final round.

Fielder remains one of the most powerful players in baseball, but this performance is on par with his surprisingly low 16 home runs in 94 games. With 276 career home runs and playing in his ninth season, it's not hard to see why fans are so surprised by his lack of power. Fielder smacked a 483-foot bomb, which had the fans in attendance clamoring for a repeat of Fielder's 2012 victory. Back-to-back wins were not to be, however, as Fielder hit just five total home runs in the round that Yoenis Cespedes struck 17. Hitter No. 1 for the NL will hit first followed by Hitter No. 1 for the AL.
